Sachtleben MCT: In the lead thanks to flexibility!
New technique permits extremely late addition of TiO2 to PA and PET production processes. Potentials for numerous and diverse applications in practically all branches of industry.
In the man-made fibers industry, as in many others, production invariably starts with suspensions of a range of different media. Powders (such as titanium dioxide, for example) are firstly dispersed, with great time and labour input, in these suspensions. This prepared mixture then passes through the entire time-consuming process for the production of polymers and, ultimately, the product fibers. This globally established state of the industrial art deprives manufacturers of the flexibility of changing over production to other products at short notice, or operating their plants with a number of different degrees of matting in parallel, however. This is precisely where MCT technology, developed by Sachtleben Chemie, of Duisburg, Germany, can assist. When this technique is used, the titanium dioxide particles are added to the polymerization process only at an extremely late point, “just before the end”, creating potentials for great plant flexibility, simultaneously assuring excellent fiber quality, and achieving genuine cost benefits and competitive advantages for the man-made fibers industry. The first module of Sachtleben's newly completed MCT production plant is to start operation in Duisburg in late 2010.

Longer service-lives despite heavy metal.
SACHTOTEC MD 300 improves the long-term stability of plastics.
Modern plastics enrich our lives virtually everywhere - but even the most modern plastics frequently age more rapidly than we were expecting! They may yellow if exposed too long to the sun, or become brittle at high temperatures. Up to now, polymer chemists have attempted to master these processes using only organic compounds - with varying degrees of success. The additional use of SACHTOTEC MD 300, a particularly fine-particled synthetic zinc sulfide, makes it possible to enhance significantly the resistance of polymers to heat compared to types containing only organic stabilizers. Thanks to its extremely small particle size, SACHTOTEC MD 300 is colorless in application, and can therefore also be used in dark plastics. In addition, SACHTOTEC MD 300, a crystalline solid, remains in situ in the plastic, thus effectively preventing migration.

Catalytically active Sachtleben particles revolutionize the biodiesel industry
Algae and industrial byproducts are the future of biodiesel
Increasing energy needs and the rising trend in the level of oil prices make fuels based on regenerative raw materials a both environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative. The production of biodiesel as practiced for many years involves a catalytic process followed by complex removal of the dissolved catalyst and purification of the biodiesel. In future, on the other hand, a new process using highly catalytically active particles supplied by Sachtleben will make it possible to produce biodiesel more energy-efficiently, simply and considerably more quickly than up to now. In addition, this new process will also permit the conversion of inferior fats, paper-industry waste and algae oil to high-quality diesel fuel. It will therefore no longer be necessary to plant food crops such as cereals or soya merely to obtain fuel from them. The first commercial-scale pilot plant incorporating this innovative fixed-bed catalyst has now been commissioned at Isanti, near Minneapolis, in the US state of Minnesota.
