Catalytically active Sachtleben particles revolutionize the biodiesel industry
Algae and industrial byproducts are the future of biodiesel
Increasing energy needs and the rising trend in the level of oil prices make fuels based on regenerative raw materials a both environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative. The production of biodiesel as practiced for many years involves a catalytic process followed by complex removal of the dissolved catalyst and purification of the biodiesel. In future, on the other hand, a new process using highly catalytically active particles supplied by Sachtleben will make it possible to produce biodiesel more energy-efficiently, simply and considerably more quickly than up to now. In addition, this new process will also permit the conversion of inferior fats, paper-industry waste and algae oil to high-quality diesel fuel. It will therefore no longer be necessary to plant food crops such as cereals or soya merely to obtain fuel from them. The first commercial-scale pilot plant incorporating this innovative fixed-bed catalyst has now been commissioned at Isanti, near Minneapolis, in the US state of Minnesota.
