SACHTOPERSE: Ultrafine barium sulfate for plastics

Synthetic barium-sulfate-based ultrafine particles are widely used in the thermoplastics field. With its SACHTOPERSE range, Sachtleben currently produces the world's finest-particled barium sulfate system, with a particle diameter of less than 100 nm.

The high specific surface area of this product (> 25m²/g) opens up to it applications in the field of polymer reinforcement (composites) and control of rheology/viscosity (in adhesives, for example). Ultra-fine barium-sulfate-based systems are also used for nucleation of crystalline thermoplastics. The product's chemical inertness, insensitivity to temperature, high transparency and good dispersibility permit control of the speed and degree of crystallization. Mechanical and optical product properties, and also process parameters such as cooling times, can thus be precisely adjusted. In addition, ultrafine barium sulfate absorbs X-ray energy. Plastic toy parts swallowed by children can thus be quickly located on the X-ray viewer if the masterbatch used in production of the plastic contained SACHTOPERSE as an additive. SACHTOPERSE conforms to the relevant legal codes (BgVV and FDA, for instance).
